Today, proper healthcare is considered as a necessity in the community in an effort to ensure good health for all its members. Healthcare basically refers to the management and the treatment of any health issue or concern as well as the preservation of health through various services such as medical, nursing and dental services.

Healthcare can be provided through a health insurance plan, which would be an insurance that will pay for medical expenses. A health insurance plan could be from a private health insurance firm or a public health insurance firm, such as the NHS or the National Health Service in the UK.

In the UK, although many people opt for private health insurance plans since they would have access to the more expensive hospitals, more choices for their physician and assurance for immediate treatment, a lot of people choose to receive medical services from the NHS. The NHS is a healthcare system which is publicly funded. It provides coverage to all residents of the UK. It is actually not strictly a type of insurance system as there is no premium collected, no costs are charged at the patient level and costs are not previously paid from a pool. However, it is successful in providing quality healthcare to most residents in the UK such as primary healthcare, in-patient care, dentistry, ophthalmology and long-term healthcare. They make sure that all funds (Fonds) available are being used properly to ensure better care for all patients. Here are some of the systems that are being utilized by the NHS in providing improved healthcare.

1. PAS or the Patient Administration Systems: This is a system that is designed so that all of the medical staff would be able to keep track of each patient that is being treated in a hospital, along with their condition and the heath care that they have already received. This is useful especially when patients need to be moved from one room or area to another and when they need to receive multiple treatments from various departments. The PAS is also useful in storing and organizing medical records and required future tests and treatments. Through getting information from the PAS, anyone on duty would be able to know the medical status of the patient.

2. EPR or Electronic Patient Records: This has taken over the paper-based recording that traditional hospitals are doing. This system enables medical staff to view the patient’s information and medical status, wherever the patient is.

3. PACS or Picture Archiving Communication Systems: This system electronically stores images, making them available to all medical personnel who need them. If a patient had an X-ray or ultrasound taken at a different medical facility, it can be viewed at another hospital or medical facility.

4. Maternity Records: The NHS also offers a system that allows various maternity departments from different hospitals or medical facilities to view the records of an expecting patient.

5. Choose and Book System: This allows patients to make appointments at a time and a location that would be convenient for them, reducing the number of those patients who are unable to attend their appointments. If there is a need to reschedule an appointment, the patient can do this simply and effectively.
